Efficiency and Safety in Pharmaceutical Applications

Delfin Conveyors has engineered the TECH 550E pneumatic conveyor to meet the most stringent requirements in the transfer of API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients) and HPAPI (Highly Potent Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients) within pharmaceutical environments. Developed in collaboration with the client, the system ensures maximum safety, operational efficiency, and ease of cleaning, enabling seamless powder transfer within cleanrooms without compromise.

Customer-Centric Engineering: From Problem to Solution

Following a thorough analysis of the challenges related to manual loading and contamination risk, Delfin and the client jointly selected the TECH 550E to automatically feed a mixing BIN. The Delfin team designed a custom conveying system allowing the BIN to be easily disconnected—via a flexible coupling—once filled, and subsequently connected to the client’s BIN rotation system. This enables the BIN to function as a mixer by rotating and agitating the contents without the need for dedicated external equipment.
This integrated approach minimizes downtime and costs, while enhancing production line versatility.

Precision Dosing: A Tailored Delfin Solution

To guarantee batch accuracy and repeatability, Delfin implemented a two-level dosing system:

  • Dual discharge valves to modulate powder flow into the BIN;
  • Load cells installed beneath the BIN to monitor weight in real time and automatically stop the transfer upon reaching the target quantity.

This configuration, developed in the design phase in collaboration with the client, eliminates human error, reduces waste, and ensures optimal dosing of pharmaceutical powders.

Cleanroom Compliance and CIP/WIP Integration

To mitigate operator exposure to hazardous substances, Delfin integrated an internal WIP (Wash-In-Place) system. Three AISI 316 stainless steel spray balls are mounted on the conveyor lid and, during the CIP (Clean-In-Place)cycle, rotate and spray cleaning solutions at approx. 80 °C, ensuring thorough internal cleaning without manual intervention.

For filtration, Delfin replaced traditional bag filters with in-place washable 2 µm stainless steel cartridge filters, significantly reducing maintenance-related downtime and enabling faster, safer batch changeovers — with zero direct contact between operator and APIs.

Contained Transfer: Delfin’s Closed-Loop System

To prevent any airborne powder release, Delfin designed the conveying system as a fully closed-loop architecture. Powders are transferred via hermetically sealed pipelines from pick-up to discharge point, maintaining product integrity and air cleanliness.
This system was validated with the client to comply with the highest OEB (Occupational Exposure Band)containment standards.

Continuous Innovation: From TECH 550E to Pharma 40.40 DC

Delfin continuously monitors regulatory developments and evolving market demands. Recently, the company introduced OEB-certified solutions such as the Pharma 40.40 DC, specifically engineered for the handling of high-potency pharmaceutical powders.
These new systems result from direct client feedback and are designed to deliver even higher containment levels, tailored to the most critical applications.
