Bespoke Flexible Screw Conveyor for Wastewater Processing

Bespoke Flexible Screw Conveyor for Wastewater Processing
9 Apr 2026  |
In the water and wastewater treatment sector, handling dry, dusty and cohesive materials efficiently presents ongoing operational challenges. Systems must be reliable and capable of integrating within restrictive site layouts. This project demonstrates how a bespoke engineering approach can deliver measurable improvements in process reliability and continuity.

System Requirements and Site Integration Constraints

A custom-designed flexible screw conveyor inlet system was developed and manufactured by Trantec Solids Handling for a client operating within the wastewater treatment industry. The aim of the project was to deliver a conveyor solution capable of handling powdery, cohesive materials while being specifically engineered to integrate seamlessly with the client’s existing system.

The system was required to receive material directly from an existing roller conveyor system and transfer it to the next stage of the process, and was designed to minimise the risk of blockages, spillages, and additional maintenance requirements.

Designed and manufactured in-house at Trantec’s facility in Stacksteads, Lancashire, the solution reflects a controlled engineering process from concept through to fabrication, ensuring quality, accuracy, and reliability at every stage.

Conveyor Design and Engineering Approach

The final solution comprised a 10-metre flexible screw conveyor paired with a bespoke inlet hopper, precisely configured to align with the customer’s existing system, ensuring controlled material transfer.

The inlet assembly was manufactured using a weld-as-laid construction, providing structural strength while maintaining practicality for maintenance access. A fitted lid was incorporated to contain material and support safe operation within the working environment.

As shown, the inlet configuration and fabrication detail reflect the bespoke nature of the solution and its alignment with the customer’s integration requirements, including a uniquely profiled cut-out section to achieve an accurate fit with the existing system.

To address common handling issues associated with dry, powdery or cohesive materials, such as bridging and inconsistent flow, all internal surfaces were engineered to be smooth and free-flowing, thereby minimising cleaning requirements. Additionally, a contra-rotating agitator blade was incorporated to promote material movement, reduce the risk of bridging and material accumulation, and support consistent throughput.

Operational Benefits

  • Direct integration with existing equipment
  • Controlled, consistent material flow and reduced material build-up
  • Low-maintenance operation
  • Improved operational safety and cleanliness through controlled material transfer
  • Reliable performance in demanding wastewater environments

Operational Performance and Process Improvements

The system delivers reliable material transfer, improving process continuity and helping to reduce inefficiencies and operational bottlenecks through direct integration with the existing system.

The result is a more streamlined process, with reduced manual intervention, improved cleanliness, and increased confidence in day-to-day operation.

Engineering Value of a Bespoke Approach

This project demonstrates the value of designing equipment around real-world conditions. In wastewater applications, where materials and layouts vary, a bespoke approach ensures reliable performance and long-term efficiency.

By combining practical design with in-house manufacturing capability, Trantec Solids Handling delivers tailored solutions that meet specifications while improving efficiency and operational performance.
