Flexible Screw Conveyor Systems for Powder Handling in Fertiliser Applications

Flexible Screw Conveyor Systems for Powder Handling in Fertiliser Applications
20 Apr 2026  |
In fertiliser production and materials processing, the reliable handling of bulk solids such as fine mineral powders is essential. Materials can vary in bulk density, flowability, and moisture sensitivity, often leading to bridging, inconsistent feed, or material degradation. Selecting the right bulk solids handling system is critical to ensuring consistent flow and reliable operation.

A UK-based cleantech company required a robust yet adaptable flexible screw conveyor system to support powder handling across multiple locations, including international deployment. The application involved transferring fine, potentially cohesive powders while maintaining consistent conveying and material flow, while also accommodating increased on-site storage capacity to support continuous operation. Drawing on its experience in bulk solids handling, Trantec Solids Handling designed and manufactured a bespoke system to meet these requirements.

System Design and Engineering Approach

To meet these requirements, a flexible screw conveyor system was developed, centred around a 500-litre hopper fabricated from 304 stainless steel to provide sufficient on-site storage capacity.

The hopper incorporated a bolted lid with a clamp-release hatch for safe inspection and controlled material loading, while a mesh inlet grid enhanced operational safety and broke up agglomerates before entering the system. A level probe enabled material monitoring and interfaced with the control system to support automated operation.

To promote reliable discharge, smooth internal surfaces reduced material build-up and supported ease of cleaning, while an agitator positioned at the conveyor inlet ensured consistent feed into the flexible screw and reduced the risk of bridging and rat-holing.

Material was conveyed via a 6-metre UHMWPE tube fitted with a 316 stainless steel spiral, with both inlet and outlet sections fabricated from 304 stainless steel for durability. This configuration provided a balance of flexibility, wear resistance, and gentle handling, suited to powder conveying applications.

Access to the conveyor inlet was provided via a quick-release “bomb door” with toolless dismantling handwheels and safety interlock, enabling rapid cleaning and maintenance while ensuring safe operation. Throughput was controlled via a variable speed control panel, integrated with the low-level probe for responsive and consistent operation.

Customer Feedback

The customer highlighted both the technical performance and project delivery:

“We recently worked with Trantec Solids Handling Limited on a bespoke conveyance requirement and were thoroughly impressed. Their customer service was consistently responsive and solution focused, and they delivered our equipment well ahead of the quoted lead time. Trantec were exceptionally accommodating with design modifications, ensuring the final system aligned perfectly with our operational needs. For value for money, their conveyance offerings are unmatched. We would not hesitate to work with them again.”

Operational Performance and Outcomes

Four complete flexible screw conveyor systems were supplied for deployment across multiple sites, including one international installation, as shown in the accompanying image. The modular design allowed straightforward integration into different layouts, supporting both domestic and international operations.

The system delivered consistent material flow across varying conditions, while supporting reliable operation, reduced maintenance, and improved operator safety. This project demonstrates how a well-engineered flexible screw conveyor system can provide an effective solution for handling challenging powders. By aligning material characteristics with equipment design, reliable and controlled conveying performance across a range of operating conditions can be achieved.
