Caffeine Powder Process Solutions

Caffeine Powder Process Solutions
For over 40 years, Spec Engineering has been a leading process system integrator in the food and beverage industry, with expertise in storing, feeding, conveying, mixing, blending, separation, particle size reduction, batching, controls, and automation.

In the area of size and volume reduction, our team of innovative engineers, project managers, and fabricators have a variety of unique success stories from their experience in working with the dry powder process – most recently was the particle size reduction of caffeine powder.

The Problem

Our customer was processing caffeine powder to be used as an ingredient. Early on, the client discovered that the powder over 32 microns in size was gritty and left a distinct taste. Our task was to efficiently reduce the caffeine powder’s particle size to guarantee that its taste and texture remain hidden in the overall finished product.

Our Solution

Our team here at Spec Engineering tested several types of particle reduction mills before finding the best option. The powder, which contained varying amounts of moisture, would cake or clog most mills, especially at the targeted particle size. Ultimately, we developed a process to efficiently mill the powder down to the client’s specifications, however, we discovered another issue: dust. By incorporating the Dust Rescuer, one of Spec Engineering’s proprietary SMART Products, we completed the process to mill caffeine powder below 32 micron while containing the dust exposure, thus ensuring our customer has a safe work environment.
