For suspensions, which arise during the industrial production of chemicals or pharmaceutical products and need to be separated again, special centrifuges are generally used. But it doesn’t always have to be centrifuges, excellent screening results can also be achieved for this type of solid/liquid separation using vibration screening machines. This is demonstrated in an application by J. Engelsmann AG, in which a manufacturer of pharmaceutical products wanted to drain a new suspension and classify it into three groups – without having to forego the benefits of the JEL VibSpeed vibration screening machine in the process.
Suitable for screening thanks to product spraying
Since the pharmacist was already using multiple vibration screening machines from Engelsmann, with which they were very satisfied with regard to performance and efficiency, they wanted to use this for the classification of a suspension too. In order to offer the client process reliability and to ensure that the screening machine is perfectly adapted for the task, trials were carried out beforehand in the in-house technical center. It quickly became clear that it was impossible for the standard model of the JEL VibSpeed vibration screening machine to classify the suspension.
The problem was that the liquid contained in the suspension quickly drained off as soon as it hit the screen mesh. This leaves behind a more viscous cake on the screen which is very difficult just to get through the mesh, let alone to classify. Ensuring that the mixture remains suitable for screening requires a special solution: product spraying during the screening process continually injects water so that the fluidity of the suspension is restored. Nozzles in the interior of the machine cover which always sprinkle the entire screening surface with water were used for this purpose. Since different volumes of water need to be dispensed during the screening process, the JEL VibSpeed was equipped with three different water circuit systems which can be separately adjusted in a total of six different operating modes.
In order to prevent the screen mesh from becoming clogged with product during the screening process, the VibSpeed was also equipped with an ultrasound cleaning system. This type of cleaning allows the JEL VibSpeed to be used for screening processes up to particle sizes of 40µm, even under ATEX conditions. Generally speaking, the JEL VibSpeed is also available with other cleaning systems such as ball or triangle cleaning systems. Since the client was there for the trials, it was possible to carry out an initial optical evaluation of the screening results on site, which already turned out to be very promising. Once the product samples taken were analyzed again in the pharmacist’s laboratory and found to be good, production of the two vibration screening machines all told could begin.
ATEX and GMP compliant
In order to meet the high hygiene requirements in the pharmaceutical industry, the two VibSpeeds were constructed entirely from stainless steel with FDA-compliant seals. The ground and e-polished (roughness < 0.8 µm) surfaces in the interior of the machine allow for thorough cleaning. In addition, the effort required for cleaning is reduced to a minimum thanks to the hinged cover. Even the screen inserts can be lifted out of the machine in a few simple steps and without the use of tools once the cover has been folded back and the clamping device on the front end has been released.
Since the vibration screening machines are used in potentially explosive atmospheres, they had to be suitable for ATEX Zone 1 Gas (interior and exterior) temperature class T4 and gas-tight up to 20 mbar. Even this requirement demonstrates the complexity of the profile of requirements since ultrasound cleaning is generally only used in dust Ex zones and many providers only have systems with dust Ex protection. Two years after delivery of the two JEL VibSpeed vibration screening machines, the client has already ordered a further five machines for the same task from J. Engelsmann AG.
The JEL VibSpeed is used as a protective, control or classification screening machine for a wide variety of bulk solids in all sectors of the chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and plastics industries, in particular because of its broad range of applications and its user-friendliness. The flexibility and simple handling of the JEL VibSpeed are associated in particular with the hinged cover of the machine. This saves the user a lot of time and effort for installation and cleaning.
The compact design and the versatile adjustment options for a wide variety of product characteristics allow for high flexibility in the use of the machine. The dwell time for the screening product on the mesh can be adjusted thanks to the adjustable screen angle. Agitation of the screen mesh can easily be modified through the configuration of the vibration motors. The setting range for the vibrators is between 0° and 90° at intervals of 15°. The machines in the JEL VibSpeed series are available with a maximum screening area of up to 7.5 m² and with a stationary or mobile base as required.
